If you don’t like the daily flood of pre-approved credit offers in your mailbox then you need to visit OptOutPrescreen.com, the official consumer credit reporting industry opt-out Web site. The Web site allows you to opt-out of pre-approved offers of credit and insurance from the nation’s four largest credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion. You can also complete this process by calling 888-5-OPT-OUT (888-567-8688).

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) also tracks consumers who prefer not to receive mail or telephone solicitations. The DMA can provide information about opting out of lists produced by companies that subscribe to its Mail and Telephone Preference Services.

The PowerPage is currently down. We’re working on it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

In the mean time I’m working on a piece for the PowerPage on some of my favorite new software:

1. Gizmo Project - An open source Internet telephony application for the Mac that has more features than Skype and is free.

2. Opera 8.02 Technology Preview - Now the only Mac browser to work with the BlackBerry Web Client also has BitTorrent built-in…

3. Azareus - A kick-ass BitTorent client for the Mac OS built in Java. Not the fastest thing in the world but the features (and plug-ins) more than make up for it.
